Taking the 11
Wednesday, September 06, 2006
I've taken a keen inclination for taking the 11 during this holiday period. Though this mode of getting to places surely is one that takes a much longer time than any other, it's taught me to stop to smell the roses and take myself where my curiosity leads. I really can't begin to describe the satisfaction it checks in at the end of the whole affair, but what you eventually remember is interesting places that you ventured into while on the journey. Plus it's an excellent medium for bonding.
Over the past week, I must have walked over 10km. From home to J8, Orchard to Bugis and vice versa and from home to town. That must be at least 9 hours of walking. You might think it slow, but these leisurely walks aren't merely getting from destination to destination. An end in mind, but no plan whatsoever as to the number of detours you would take before reaching there.
For example, Terence and I recently found ourselves taking numerous detours before finally reaching our predetermined destination at Bugis as we strolled there from Orchard. We saw the new Cathay Cineplex in which we notoriously sampled Ben and Jerry's ice cream and discovered where the brand new cinemas were at. We subsequently found ourselves exploring SMU and disappointed that we needed to be students to enter the library.
It's like sight-seeing in your own country. Whoever said sight-seeing was only for tourists must have been mad. In fact, it has become my new hobby! :)
Did I mention that it's increased my stamina for shopping too? Heh...
